With several different break styles to choose from and reliable waves all year-round, it’s no surprise that Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast is one of the top surfing destinations in the world. With uncrowded beaches, a gorgeous natural backdrop of pristine mountains and jungle, and swells and waves ideal for all ability levels, surfing in Costa Rica has a number of advantages.
Although surfing in Costa Rica recently got a boost with the announcement that high-power celebrity couple Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady have been enjoying the beautiful waves and gorgeous swells, the area has been the beloved home of surfing enthusiasts for generations.
Here are some of our favorite surfing spots on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica:
- Dominical – Just off the beautiful beach of Playa Dominical are regular long waves with a gorgeous ride straight back to the beach. An excellent place for intermediate surfers to hone their skills.
- Manuel Antonio Beach – If the sights of the bay don’t impress you then the gorgeous waves certainly will. Ideal for beginning surfers, waves break both left and right, with the occasional big swell rebounding from the coast.
- Mouth of the Quepos River – An outstanding point break, the area features a steady supply of picture-perfect left waves. Low tide is also a great time to enjoy point break surfing for surfers of all ability levels.
- Isla Damas – The waters just offshore of the”Island of the Lady” are home to a very nicely secluded beach break. With both left and right breaking waves that include photo-perfect barrels, this is a great spot for surfers of all levels.
If you’d like to experience the waves of Costa Rica for yourself, we recommend both Endless Olas (“Olas” is Spanish for “Waves”) Surf Camp and the Manuel Antonio Surf School on Isla Damas. With years of experience in teaching the fundamentals and fine art of surfing, these two surf schools are an ideal place to enjoy this exciting sport. Instructors are available for surfers of all abilities and everyone from first-time surfers to experienced professionals are welcome.
