Dominical, The Perfect Costa Rica Surf Town
Costa Rica is home to some of the world’s most beautiful spots for surfing. A combination of gorgeous nature, abundant sunshine, generous swells, and one of the finest surfing beaches in the country is located in the tiny town of Dominical on the Pacific Coast.
The right balance of undiscovered small-town conveniences and everything you need to suit up and enjoy surfing, Dominical is a small coastal village that is still accessed by a dirt road. Located about a 30-minute drive from the nearest airport in the city of Quepos, Dominical has largely escaped the attention of more popular nearby surf spots on the famous Manuel Antonio beaches and national park.
Perhaps the finest attribute of Dominical is that there is little to do in the town other than surf, except for maybe engaging in a brief kick-around with a soccer ball or practicing your Spanish with the locals. Without any fast food restaurants or fancy hotels, Dominical is the perfect place to enjoy the “old way of life” in the country, sipping on fresh-squeezed orange juice and relaxing in a hammock after a long day out on the waves.
The surfing, however, is why people come from around the world to visit this sleepy town, as the offshore breaks and little islands are blessed with consistent waves that are rarely crowded. The Manuel Antonio Surf School andCamp (MASS) is based in Dominical and was founded by a local Tico (Costa Rican) surfer who wanted to share the joys and thrills of the ancient sport with travelers.
MASS has exclusive access to some of the best surfing spots in and around Dominical, including river mouths and uninhabited islands with beaches perfect for surfersof all skill levels. MASS employs a team of professional local surfers who are well-trained in water safety.
MASS uses video capture and wave motion techniques to teach even first-time surfers how to get up and ride on their first day. Experienced surfers love MASS because the experienced coaches excel at identifying new techniques and movements that will improve every surfer’s skill set.
MASS believes that surfing is just one part of a holistic and authentic Costa Rican experience. MASS organizes complimentary activities like yoga on the beach, massage, and tours to explore the beautiful nature in the region. MASS also organizes tours that include exciting activities like kayaking, horsebackriding, deep sea fishing, whitewater rafting, waterfall climbing, and bird watching.
