A Short Guide to Enjoying Playa Dominical in Costa Rica

Playa Dominical in Costa Rica

Playa Dominical Travel Tips

With world-class waves, a beautiful natural backdrop, and plenty of sunshine, it’s no wonder that Playa Dominical is one of the top surfing destinations in Costa Rica. With all of the traditional charm of a classic Costa Rica beach town, Playa Dominical is a great place to lie in a hammock, enjoy the landscape, or take to the waves to enjoy some of the best surfing on the planet.

Far from the hustle and bustle of the capital, Dominical is still a laid-back beach town where people enjoy a slower pace of life. Located close to the famous Manuel Antonio National Park, Dominical is situated on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) from the town of Quepos and the termination of the Quepos River. The small town has no multinational fast food outlets, shopping malls, or restaurants, attracting mostly backpackers and itinerant surfers.

With several panoramic side roads leading to this relaxed town, Dominical has so far escaped the throngs of tourists that form the backbone of the Costa Rican economy. Using ground transportation, Dominical can be reached by following the coastal highway from Quepos or overland through the Cerro de la Muerte gap of the Talamanca Mountains.

While tides near the shore challenge swimmers at the beautiful Playa Dominical, the waves further offshore are some of the most consistent in the world. Both left and right breaking waves make Playa Dominical one of the top surfing locations in the country. The deep blue water, bright green landscape, and abundant sunshine all combine to make Dominical one of the prettiest, most unspoiled locations for surfing.

Activities in Dominical

Surfing is still the most popular activity to enjoy in Dominical. The gorgeous natural setting is perfect for a range of holistic activities, including yoga on the beach, professional massages, and landscape painting. Close to shore, visitors can enjoy the increasingly popular sport of stand up paddling (commonly called SUP). Further out to sea, visitors can enjoy fantastic deep water fishing or enjoy whale watching tours.

Once a year, Dominical plays host to the Envision festival. Drawing in a motley assortment of global travelers, the Envision festival celebrates music, yoga, and art.

Dominical is conveniently close to some of the most beautiful natural areas of Costa Rica, including the Marino Ballena National Park, Manuel Antonio National Park, Drake Bay, and the Nauyaca waterfalls. Popular activities include horseback riding, bird watching, and canoeing/white water rafting.
