Located on the sunny Pacific Coast of Costa Rica is the region known as Manuel Antonio. A national park by the same name is home to several of the best surf beaches in the country, including Playa (Spanish for “Beach”) Manuel Antonio. A world-famous mecca for surfers, Playa Manuel Antonio is also renowned for its lively festivals and parties.
Playa Manuel Antonio is located just four miles (six kilometers) south of the city of Quepos in Costa Rica’s Puntarenas Province. Once better known for its coffee growing, Manuel Antonio has surged to become one of the country’s most popular tourist spots.
Manuel Antonio National Park measures just three square miles (983 hectares) in size, making it one of the smallest national parks in the country, but it is also one of the most popular. Renowned for its white sand beaches, lovely hiking trails, and abundant wildlife (including three-toed sloths and hundreds of bird species), Manuel Antonio National Park has been ranked as one of the top 12 most beautiful national parks in the world by Forbes magazine.
There are four beaches inside the park limits: Playa Manuel Antonio, Espadilla Sur, Teloro, and Playita (“Little Beach”). With large berms of white sand, it’s easy to see why these beaches are such popular destinations. To get from Playa Manuel Antonio to the other beaches, visitors must walk across a “tombolo” or natural land bridge, and the crystal waters are ideal for snorkeling. There are also several beaches immediately adjacent to the national park which are ideal spots to enjoy surfing.
